KARACHI: Federal Minister of Ports and Shipping Kamran Michael has decided to waive demurrage against consignments that could not be cleared from the ports due to the 12-day goods transporters’ strike.
He made this announcement while visiting the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), along with Khawaja Saad Rafique, Federal Minister for Railways.
He also announced refunds/adjustment against those charges that the ports had received for the period. He assured the business community that the detention charges of private terminal operators would also be waived off after discussions.
Michael criticised the halt of port activities by goods transporters and said that it was unethical to block the port for just one demand related to his ministry.
“Some elements may be behind the strike to deliberately cause losses to economy,” he said.
Furthermore, he said that he has directed to hold board meetings for smooth functioning of ports. “Almost 1,300 ghost employees have been identified who are drawing salaries without their attendance,” he added.
About overstaffing at the ports, he said that it had been directed that no contracts should be renewed.
